Run walk run to the weekend

Feb. 27 — Part-time Sandy Springs resident Jeff Galloway passed away at 80 years old on Thursday. Galloway was an Olympian and running coach who founded the popular run-walk-run method that made the sport more accessible and enjoyable for many of us. For years, Galloway’s Phidippides in Sandy Springs was THE place to get your running gear and meet friends for weekend runs.

😢 Rough Draft readers shared their thoughts and memories on the passing of this local legend.

🌞 After Thursday’s much-needed rain, weekend temps around 65 – 70 degrees will be a reminder spring is just around the corner.

Now for some local headlines:

👍 Fulton County Chair Robb Pitts said the county is stronger than ever during his State of the County address on Feb. 24. “As I visit communities across our county, I hear concerns about the future, about public safety, about affordability, and about election integrity,” Pitts said. “All of which I understand, but my response is simple: Fulton County is strong. In fact, we’re much stronger now than ever before.”

🔥 One suspect has been arrested, and law enforcement is looking for a second after a series of fires were set in wooded and grassy areas in Sandy Springs and Dunwoody earlier this week.

👑 Three people may be charged after climbing to the top of the Queen building in Sandy Springs as reported by WSB-TV.

Sandy Springs residents weigh in on transportation priorities

🚘 Sandy Springs held open houses Feb. 24-26 for its Transportation Master Plan, a planning document identifying priority projects around the city for future funding rounds.

This November, Fulton County residents will vote in a referendum to continue the Transportation Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (TSPLOST), which is set to expire at the end of March 2027.

Incorporated cities in Fulton County, excluding Atlanta, share the sales tax revenue based on their population. The county’s sales tax is paid by anyone who buys taxable products or services in Fulton County, outside the city limits of Atlanta.

TSPLOST projects fund traffic safety and congestion relief, bridges, road maintenance and paving, sidewalks, multi-use paths, and bicycle lanes. Examples in Sandy Springs include the Johnson Ferry Road at Mount Vernon Highway realignmentPATH400, and corridor improvements along Hammond Drive, Mount Vernon Highway, and Roswell Road’s North End Boulevard.
