Making a statement
March 5 — One of this week’s featured Sketchbook artists set out to make a political statement. The other set out to fill a municipal lobby with a tree.
Philadelphia artist Carole Loeffler has been posting handcrafted felt words of wisdom in public since 2018. Her “Granny Graffiti” series was always intended as a direct action. Now it’s part of a broader political art conversation happening at the Museum of Design Atlanta.
Atlanta sculptor Katie Vigilante took a commission to create a signature piece for Chamblee City Hall, discovered a personal connection to a Ukrainian city at war, and built something she calls the honor of her life. “The Tree of Kovel” is permanent, public, and entirely her own.
What are you making that has something to say?

Words of wisdom
✂️ Carole Loeffler cuts words from felt, mounts them on vintage doilies, and puts them on telephone poles. Her project, “Granny Graffiti,” has been showing up when people need it most. Now it’s at MODA.

Rebirth to honor resilience
🇺🇦 A century-old, dead tree trunk was headed for a creek. Atlanta sculptor Katie Vigilante had other plans for it – a place in her “The Tree of Kovel” installation at Chamblee City Hall, which honors a Ukrainian city and the people fighting to save it.
