Colors everywhere

March 11 — It’s Cathy from Rough Draft with my weekly newsletter on Dunwoody. Welcome to summer, I guess. I don’t know much about gardening, but my cold-loving pansies were finally looking perky, and will now go into a drama-filled, fainting, withering, collapse that makes me so very sad.

✏️ Before we get to the week’s stories, here are a few items of interest coming up:

💬 On March 18, Dunwoody Mayor Lynn Deutsch will provide two opportunities for citizens to learn about the state of the city. The first event is March 18 at the Crowne Plaza, presented by the Greater Perimeter Chamber of Commerce. This is a ticketed event with a fee. Deutsch will also speak at a free event on March 23 at 8:30 a.m. in the council’s chambers at Dunwoody City Hall. Both sessions will include a Q&A.

☘️ Dig up something green that didn’t come out of your refrigerator (or car – see below), and spend your morning with Dunwoody’s finest at the next Coffee with a Cop, which will take place at the Rotunda Market inside First Baptist Atlanta on March 17 from 8-10 a.m.

♻️ Registration is now open for the City of Dunwoody’s Electronics Recycling Event, taking place from 9 a.m.-noon on Sat., April 11, at St. Luke’s Presbyterian Church, 1978 Mt. Vernon Road. This free event is open to Dunwoody residents, and you must register in advance. I have a drawer full of cords that I have hoarded over the years. And it’s time to get up my nerve and part ways with them.

🪞Through the Looking Glass has changed its dinner location from the Donaldson-Bannister House to Vino Venue in the Georgetown Shopping Center on March 21. As a reminder, it’s a night of wine and cheese tasting and a silent auction. Owner of Vino Venue and sommelier Emily Mendyka will hand-pick wines from Italy and speak about the pairings throughout the event. Tickets are still available.

🥀 Thanks for reading,
Cathy

Slowing your roll on Ashford Dunwoody

🚅 The Dunwoody City Council at its March 9 meeting authorized the renewal of its permit to enforce speed limits with some significant changes, including a 10-mile-an-hour reduction for Ashford Dunwoody Road.

“As part of the renewal process, the city is required to submit a list of roads and corresponding speed limits for approval by the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT),” the memo said. “In accordance with state law, GDOT requires the local jurisdiction to perform an engineering and traffic investigation to support proposed changes to established speed limits.”

Based on those studies and a recommendation from the council at a November 2025 meeting, a list of roads with reduced speed limits will be submitted to the GDOT, including the city’s most-traveled corridor, Ashford Dunwoody Road.

Holi-daze

🎨 More than 1,000 people attended the third annual Create Dunwoody Holi celebration on March 7, a vibrant South Asian tradition that marks the arrival of spring and the harvest season.

During the event, attendees enjoyed food, music, and threw gulal (colored powder) and colored water in a display of joy during the afternoon event. Almost 1,500 color packs were sold that day.

“Holi in Dunwoody was a vibrant and joyful celebration, and it was wonderful to see so many people come together from Dunwoody and across the area to take part,” said Create Dunwoody Executive Director Rosemary Watts. “The event was full of energy, color, music, and community. Create Dunwoody events like this show how arts and culture can bring people together through shared cultural experiences.”

Picture this: Clean break?

🚮 I have fond memories of taking my minivan to the Sunshine Car Wash in Dunwoody Village when the kids were young and sticky, and the folks there did a great job, given the hazardous conditions inside.

As the years went on, I found the quality of the service went down as the price went up, so I took my car to TOP Express, which was cheaper, with the caveat that you have to perform the inside labor (not nearly as gross these days).

🚙 Now it seems that this model is being adapted, from the looks of the picture above, with the impending opening of Mr. Clean Car Wash, which is moving into the space that formerly housed Sunshine.  Google predicts a May startup.
