Hard-headed decisions

March 18 — It’s Cathy from Rough Draft with my weekly newsletter on Dunwoody. Talk about stubborn. Last week, I wheeled my little space heater from its spot in my not-so-airtight sunroom/office to a closet in the guest bedroom because 80-degree days mean “winter is over.”

🥶 Now I’m white-knuckling it (literally) because pulling it back into commission would mean bowing to the whims of nature, and I’m not a quitter. Oh well.

Before we get to this week’s news, here are a few upcoming events.

♻️ Spruill Center for the Arts is holding its first Recycled Art Market on April 18 from 11 a.m.-5 p.m., featuring art made from upcycled, reused, or recycled materials. Anyone wishing to sell their wares can fill out an application form.

🍻 Dunwoody’s biggest food-and-drink block party is back with more than 80 vendors this spring. Green Eggs & Kegs, the annual food festival hosted at Funwoody Village in Dunwoody, celebrates its fifth year on April 18, from noon-5 p.m. The all-inclusive event gives ticket holders unlimited tastings from more than 30 food vendors and drinks from 50 beer, wine, and spirits partners.

😂 The Dunwoody Comedy Festival Encore is March 28 at Vintage Pizza on Chamblee Dunwoody Road from 7-10 p.m. Ten talented comedians will take the stage for rapid-fire, eight-minute sets during the evening.

Note: These comedy shows are recommended for audiences 18 and older as they may include mature themes and language that could be inappropriate for youth. More details can be found here.

📖 The Dunwoody Silent Book Club is meeting in Chamblee at Wild Aster Books on March 28 from noon-2 p.m. It’s pretty self-explanatory – come, read a book, talk afterward if you want, and leave. Best idea ever.

🏃🏽‍➡️ Let’s get on with it,
Cathy

We’re good over here

🏙️ Dunwoody Mayor Lynn Deutsch, who was the keynote speaker at today’s Greater Perimeter Chamber breakfast at the Crowne Plaza Ravinia, told attendees that the city is making it a desirable place to live, work, and play while maintaining financial stability.

She touted the relocation of human resources company Trinet, which will bring about 750 jobs to the area, as an example of how government and businesses can work together to create jobs and foster a healthy economy.

Not crazy about SAP process, says everyone

🏫 DeKalb County School District administrators at their March 9 meeting reviewed data gathered on the first phase of its sweeping Student Assignment Project, which proposes closing 27 schools and expanding or repurposing others.

As expected, the results showed overall dissatisfaction with the proposed plan, the decision-making process, and a lack of quantifiable data about cost savings that will result from the upheaval.

Among the schools under consideration for closure are the highly rated Ashford Park Elementary in Brookhaven, and Vanderlyn and Kingsley elementary schools in Dunwoody.

🔮 The plan will continue down the road with the next steps to be revealed on March 20. Read more about the feedback here.

Monarchs and Margaritas at DNC

🦋 On May 2, guests will step into an evening of celebration at Monarchs & Margaritas, Dunwoody Nature Center’s signature fundraising event, complete with dinner, live music, and interactive experiences.

“This opportunity to invest in a lasting legacy of nature, conservation, and community engagement will help preserve the beauty of Dunwoody’s green spaces, inspire future generations, and protect our natural world,” according to the Dunwoody Nature Center’s online invitation.

The event, which will be held rain or shine, will be at the Tent in the Park at the Dunwoody Nature Center, 5443 Roberts Drive.

The evening includes dinner and an open bar, a tour of the Wildcat Creek Learning Lab – the center’s new education space – plus a paddle-raise auction event and “a race for the golden ticket,” according to the website’s information.

Picture this: Free gas? No

⛽ Someone posted this picture of the Exxon on Ashford Dunwoody Road on social media, and instead of paying attention to the commentary, I was drawn to the $0.00-per gallon gas price.

Yes, it’s too good to be true – the Exxon is rebranding and will reopen as a Shell. Side note: the former Exxon had a lot of mixed reviews on Yelp, so Shell may have some work to do to earn back public trust. Also, who rates gas stations?
