Space held

March 18 — Space to create isn’t easy to come by for most artists. For women artists, even less so.

During Women’s History Month, this week’s Sketchbook looks at two exhibitions that address just that.

At the Suwanee Arts Center, “HER Collective Voice” gives wallspace to women artists working across painting, mixed media, photography and fiber art – including a “Best in Show” mixed-media portrait that carries three generations of women who never held a gallery wall until now.

At the Emma Darnell Aviation Museum and Conference Center, Fulton County Arts and Culture curator Tisha Smith has spent three years building “EmpowerHER” into one of the largest exhibitions of women artists in Georgia – 70 artists in year one, nearly 200 this year, and a community that keeps growing long after the show comes down.

Both are still on view. Both are worth the drive.

What spaces are you opening up?
