A new state-of-the-art modular studio now sits next to the Abernathy Arts Center, set to host Arts Sandy Springs’ ceramics classes for the public beginning this fall.

An Abernathy Arts Center spokesperson told Rough Draft Atlanta that some permitting is still required before the new classrooms can open, but other arts classes are available.

Sandy Springs Communications Director Carter Long said the city does not have an official grand opening scheduled, but the public will have a chance to see it soon.

“We’re getting close,” Long said. “We’ll be announcing the ribbon cutting next week, but it’ll be the end of April.”

In 2024, the city demolished an aging stone building on the 3.6-acre site at 245 Johnson Ferry Road to make room for the new ceramics studios.

The modular structure, about 1,200 square feet, is expected to have a lifespan of five to seven years and can be relocated for future use. Last July, the Sandy Springs City Council approved a $600,000 contract with Rubio and Sons to construct the temporary arts facility.

The new structure is a vibrant, creative space featuring two classrooms, dedicated storage, and a restroom. Exterior improvements include a new wrap-around deck, refreshed building façade, enhanced sidewalk access, and landscaping designed to complement the surrounding campus.

The city has an agreement with Art Sandy Springs to provide arts programming at the Abernathy Arts Center. The Sandy Springs Public Facilities Authority approved the transfer of the Abernathy Arts Center from Fulton County in 2021, as part of a quit-claim deed.
