Home is where the art is
Wednesday, May 6 — Some artists are native to the cities where they live and work. Others choose their creative homes. And that choice changes everything.
Painter Carlos Solis left Venezuela to find his creative footing in Kennesaw. Nearly two decades later, he’s curating “In the Beginning,” a group exhibition opening Sat., May 9, at the Hudgens Center’s Fowler Gallery in Duluth. The show highlights artists from across the globe who also adopted Atlanta as home and asks what we share before culture, borders, and history pull us apart.
Designer and illustrator George F. Baker III, though born in Nebraska, came up in Detroit – a city that runs on music and grit – and brought that frequency with him to Atlanta. This year, the Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs handed him the commission to design the key art for the Atlanta Jazz Festival. Our conversation with Baker explores how two cities with deep musical souls shaped that work.
Atlanta has a way of drawing people in and pulling something out of them.
Have you heard the call?
