The man accused of shooting a rider on a MARTA train at Midtown Station two days ago was arrested Sunday morning after a short foot chase through the woods in Douglasville, capping a multiagency manhunt that stretched from downtown Atlanta to the western suburbs.
Anthony Tyrone Gresham was taken into custody on Lee Road without incident and booked into the Douglas County jail on charges of aggravated assault, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
Around 10 a.m. Sunday, members of an FBI task force spotted Gresham walking along Lee Road in Douglasville. A Douglas County Sheriff’s deputy moved in to approach him, but Gresham ran into nearby woods.
A perimeter was set, and K-9 units from the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office flushed Gresham out of the woods and back onto Lee Road, where officers took him into custody.
The man who was shot aboard a MARTA train on June 5 got a gunshot wound to his left arm and leg. He’s expected to be OK.
Channel 2 Action News has reported that the recent uptick in violence on MARTA properties has caused the agency to increase police visibility as the federal government investigates.
Tiffany Salas told Channel 2 that is breathing a sigh of relief, after learning the man accused of the shooting on board a MARTA train Friday is in jail.
“I’m happy that they caught him,” she said.
Some riders, though, are still concerned since this is at least the third attack in recent weeks.
“Just two weeks ago, it happened to somebody else,” rider Flash Bryant said.
There should be some sort of security for what is brought on the trains, and what is not,” rider Jake Smith said.
