While it’s a few miles from downtown Atlanta, the I-285 and SR 400 interchange in Sandy Springs is expected to have increased traffic congestion during peak travel periods and match days.

The Georgia Department of Transportation announced on June 15 that its contractor will continue work along two segments in Sandy Springs through mid-July when the FIFA World Cup wraps up.

Construction in Sandy Springs

Construction on six of the project’s 16 sections, each roughly one mile, is now underway. The team managing the multi-billion-dollar highway widening, called the SR 400 Express Lanes project, is Peach State Partners.

Segment A extends north from the North Springs MARTA station in central Sandy Springs to Roberts Drive south of the Chattahoochee River and has two sections under construction. Sandy Springs residents along the highway corridor have protested the project’s design features and neighborhood impacts.

GDOT’s announcement says early construction activities will continue near Exit 5 at Abernathy Road and the North Springs MARTA station. Work underway includes grubbing operations ahead of concrete barrier placement, lane striping, and new roadway signage.

Residents and commuters can expect to see crews working on the southbound shoulder between the Spalding Drive bridge and Abernathy Road ramps in preparation for future traffic shifts.

North of the Chattahoochee

Segment B, the middle, extends north from Roberts Drive in Sandy Springs across the Chattahoochee River and through Roswell to Kimball Bridge Road in Alpharetta.

According to GDOT’s June newsletter, drainage installation activities are continuing at the Holcomb Bridge Road and SR 400 interchange, within the project right-of-way and outside of active travel lanes. Also, grubbing operations will continue along the shoulder between Encore Parkway and Haynes Bridge Road.

The northernmost Segment C extends north from the center of Alpharetta to Shiloh Road in southern Forsyth County.

Crews continue grubbing operations in the previously cleared areas between McGinnis Ferry Road and McFarland Parkway, the newsletter said.

Additional construction activity, grading, and clearing operations will continue near the Windward Parkway MARTA park-and-ride facility. The work is not expected to impact commuters utilizing the park-and-ride location.
