The Dunwoody Garden Club and Parks is launching the city’s celebration of the Declaration of Independence’s 250th anniversary with a Blue Star Memorial ceremony on July 2 at Brook Run Park.
Blue Star Memorial markers are nationwide tributes honoring the U.S. Armed Forces, initiated by garden clubs after World War II. The large metal signs can be found in parks, national cemeteries, and soon, the new Brook Run Park Veterans Memorial.

The July 2 dedication ceremony for Brook Run Park’s Blue Star Memorial begins at 5:30 p.m. at the Veterans Memorial across from the Skate Park at 4770 North Peachtree Road.

The Dunwoody Homeowner Associations’ Fourth of July parade is one of the biggest Independence Day events in all of metro Atlanta, and the Blue Star Memorial Marker Dedication Ceremony is an opportunity for a patriotic warm-up.
The ceremony will feature the Sons of the American Revolution Color Guard, appearing in full historical uniform and a dedication, followed by a Callanwolde Concert Band concert at the Brook Run Amphitheater. Food, family activities, and a host of local veterans groups will be there.
Mayor Lynn Deutsch and Police Chief Mike Carlson are scheduled to speak. The Dunwoody Parks and Recreation Department is assisting the garden club with the ceremony.
Dunwoody Garden Club President Patsy Newton said she encourages the community to invite family and friends who are serving or have served in the armed forces.
“Invitations have also been sent to many veterans and veteran groups as well as the United Service Organization,” Newton said. “We are hoping for good attendance and praying for good weather.”
