Sandy Springs begins its ‘Next Chapter’

🏞️ Sandy Springs staff coined the 12-month process to create the city’s new comprehensive plan and recreation and parks master plan as “The Next Chapter.”

The public had its first say in the city’s update of its land-use and development policies at a June 23 kickoff meeting at City Springs. While a comprehensive plan is not a legally binding document, it is routinely cited in zoning decisions by city boards, staff, and council members.

Sukirti Ghosh, a principal and urban designer with Rhodeside & Harwell, said his firm and the city’s other vendors are kicking off a “significant” one-year process that culminates with state submission next June. “The next six months is the community engagement process,” Ghosh said. “We’re going to be drafting the plan at the beginning of next year, and then we’ll go through the review … hearings and the adoption process.”

Sandy Springs introduces chatbot for city services

👨🏽‍💻 Sandy Springs launched its new cutting-edge AI assistant on its public-facing website on June 23 to help users find information about the city, its services, and community activities. The hope is to reduce the need to call or search across multiple pages.

The city joins others in the metro area, such as Atlanta and Peachtree Corners, in working with vendors to develop new technology that introduces citizens to local government operations and helps them find what they’re looking for.

“It’s not a replacement for the call center,” Keith McMellen, director of data strategies, analytics, and AI integration in Sandy Springs said. “But, questions like ‘When is the next Sparkle Sandy Springs?’ or ’Who do I contact for trash service?’ can be handled by the chatbot so the call center can deal with more complicated requests.”

Hopeton Hibbert exhibit opens at Chastain Arts Center

🪵 Seven years ago, Hopeton St. Clair Hibbert Jr. took a walk down the railroad tracks in his Grant Park neighborhood with his sons. Salvaged metal pieces and wood fragments caught his eye and imagination. What grew from those walks is now on view at Chastain Arts Center in Buckhead, where Hopeton Hibbert’s solo exhibition “The Weight and the Witness,” curated by Kevin Sipp, brings together two of his most ambitious bodies of work.

The exhibition’s title does double duty. “The Weight” refers to Hibbert’s Ode to John Henry sculpture series, assemblages built from salvaged railroad metal, Brazilian hardwood, rebar, and concrete, bound together with a 3,000-PSI liquid weld epoxy.

“The Witness” portion of the exhibit centers on Hibbert’s London Plane Tree Study. Hibbert began the photo series with macro photography of tree bark, which he then mirrored to create Rorschach-like compositions. The work draws on W.E.B. Du Bois’s concept of double consciousness, the experience of seeing oneself through the eyes of others.
