Despite objections from MARTA and some Summerhill residents, a Formula 1 race car showcase has been greenlit for Saturday, Aug. 1
The “Red Bull Showrun” will close down a portion of Hank Aaron Drive (between Fulton Street and Georgia Avenue) starting at 4 p.m. as professional drivers perform burnouts, high-speed demonstrations and precision driving, including “donuts in designated 360° performance zones.”
According to the event website, the Red Bull Showrun Atlanta will bring “elite motorsports to the heart of the city, featuring Oracle Red Bull Racing, the Visa Cash App Racing Bulls, on- and off-road Ford vehicles, additional motorsports spectacles and a special appearance by Atlanta’s own Killer Mike.”
The event is scheduled to wrap up at 7 p.m.
Organizers said parking in the area is extremely limited and recommended that spectators use MARTA and rideshare services.
According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, MARTA officials objected to the event along Hank Aaron Drive, where the transit agency’s Rapid-A bus transit line is still under construction.
Residents of the Neighborhood Planning Unit that includes Summerhill voted against the event twice, concerned about the impacts to MARTA and worried they’ll end up with the “chaos” reported in San Francisco after a similar demonstration was held in February.
However, the AJC reports that the City of Atlanta approved final permits for the event this week.
