Wednesday, Aug. 5 — It’s Cathy from Rough Draft with my weekly newsletter on Dunwoody. School started this week, so the traffic party is pretty much over. I’m still in the mountains, where the weather is so cool that I am wearing a sweater 24/7. Sorry, not sorry.
Let’s get to a few observations before jumping into the news.
🎥 Dunwoody was featured, not in a good way, in John Oliver’s “Last Week Tonight,” during a commentary about Flock cameras. The Dunwoody part starts about 22 minutes into the 30-minute monologue. It’s gotten almost two million views so far.
🦁 Pics in the Park on Aug. 7 will feature “Zootopia” at the always-unpronounceable Pernoshal Park on Shallowford Road.
🍷 The first-ever Sips Around The Village will be held Aug. 29 from 4-8 p.m., brought to you by the Village Merchants Alliance, Create Dunwoody and The Greater Perimeter Chamber. A $40 ticket gets you five tokens for sips at any participating restaurant, a custom coozie, and $5 drink specials.
🧑🏼🎨 Spruill Center for the Arts will open its latest exhibition, “Ancestry of Belonging,” on August 13 at the gallery on Ashford Dunwoody Road. There’s an opening reception on August 14 and an artists’ talk on August 23.

New chef at McKendrick’s, Park Place evolving
🥩 McKendrick’s Steak House, located in the Park Place Shopping Center in Dunwoody, announced that Branden Holte has joined the restaurant as executive chef.
Holte, an Atlanta native, has more than 20 years of experience leading kitchens in the city, according to a release from McKendrick’s.
🚪The restaurant is one of the shining stars in the somewhat empty Park Place Shopping Center, which, while adding tenants, has also lost several. Read more about Holte and the center’s rebranding efforts.

City council members get schooled
🎓 Dunwoody City Council Members Catherine Lautenbacher, Rob Price, and Joe Seconder received the Harold F. Holtz Municipal Training Institute’s Certificate of Achievement during the Georgia Municipal Association’s (GMA) Annual Convention in Savannah on June 29.
The Harold F. Holtz Municipal Training Institute is a cooperative effort between GMA and the University of Georgia’s Carl Vinson Institute of Government, offering a nationally recognized series of training opportunities for city officials, according to a release from the city.
🗳️ Earning the certificate requires 72 hours of training, including at least 36 hours of required coursework and completion of the Newly Elected Officials Institute. Sounds like a real laugh riot. Read more here.
Mt. Vernon Road input sought
🗝️ The City of Dunwoody is seeking public input on the concept design for Mt. Vernon Path Phase 3, a proposed shared-use path along the north side of Mt. Vernon Road from Vermack Road to Dunwoody Village Parkway.
This phase is the last link along Mount Vernon Road to complete a key connection from Jett Ferry Road and Dunwoody Village Parkway. The project is designed to improve walking and biking access between neighborhoods and Dunwoody Village.
“This project continues efforts to provide safe, connected, and accessible transportation options along a key corridor in our community,” said Dunwoody Public Works Director Michael Smith. “We encourage residents and property owners to review the concept design and share their feedback during the public comment period.”

The Roswell King Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR) was honored by the City of Dunwoody on June 17 with a proclamation recognizing the chapter’s efforts to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States and its ongoing commitment to preserving American history.
