Friday, Aug. 28 — Hey, it’s Hayden with my weekly Norcross newsletter.
It’s hard to believe August is almost over, but I couldn’t be more pumped about college football season. In Georgia, and throughout the Southeast, college football is a bit of an organized civic religion, with Saturdays as the high holy day.
I’m lucky to be a third-generation University of Georgia fan. One of my cousins went to Auburn, which was actually a big deal in my family. War Eagle! (When they’re playing Alabama.)
The Dawgs don’t play until next Saturday, Sept. 5, at 3 p.m. against the Tennessee State Tigers in Athens, but the North Carolina Tar Heels and Texas Christian University kick the season off tomorrow at noon in Dublin, Ireland.
⬇️ Quick round-up of things to know:
🏛️ The Norcross Planning & Zoning Board is scheduled to meet next Wednesday, Sept. 2, for its regularly scheduled monthly meeting. However, no agenda or meeting item has been added to the online portal yet.
🎸 Macon Music Review, a Southern rock band celebrating genre legends, is closing out the city’s Summer Concert Series with the season’s last performance tonight from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. at Thrasher Park.
🇺🇸 The city announced its annual 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony at Betty Mauldin Park will begin at 8:15 a.m. with a keynote address, followed by bagpipes and a ringing of the bell at 8:45 a.m.

Norcross taps new city manager, brings her on early as a consultant
👩🏾💼 The Norcross City Council held a special-called meeting before the regularly scheduled Aug. 24 policy work session to appoint former Henry County Manager Cheri Hobson-Matthews as the new city manager. She starts on Sept. 11.
“I’m excited to be here, and I’m excited to set the standard,” Hobson-Matthews said. “I’m excited to see what we’re going to bring to the city of Norcross … thank you all so very much, and I’ll be here bright and early in the morning.”
Elected officials also voted unanimously to approve Hobson-Matthews’ new employment and transitional consulting contracts, allowing her to work with city staff for the next two weeks.

Community tours of new Norcross police headquarters offered ahead of Sept. 8 opening
🚓 The City of Norcross, the Southwest Gwinnett Chamber of Commerce, and a group of active community members have scheduled tours of the new public safety building Sept. 1-3, before the Norcross Police Department and Municipal Court begin operations.
The police department is scheduled to begin operations inside the Norcross Public Safety Building on Sept. 8. While the city’s new Real Time Crime Center is still awaiting completion, the $27 million facility is ready for community tours.

Norcross nears start of construction on $15 million greenway
👣 The Georgia Department of Transportation and the City of Norcross are moving forward with the $15 million Norcross Beaver Ruin Greenway project and are nearing approval of construction and site inspection contracts in September.
At the Norcross City Council’s policy work session on Aug. 24, elected officials got a first look at a more than $11 million construction contract with Astra Group, the preferred low bidder.
Because it’s a federally funded project through GDOT and the ARC, the city only needs to contribute 20% of project costs, which have increased by more than 33% since preliminary engineering began in 2019.

PICTURE THIS: Lillian Webb Park and a little history
⚾ Lillian Webb Park is a 4.2-acre recreational area with a large green space and splash pad between College Street and Buford Highway in historic downtown.
The park, which used to be a baseball stadium and the home of the Norcross Nuggets, is named after Lillian Webb, a trailblazing former Gwinnett County Commission chair and 11-term Norcross mayor.
Webb was first elected to the Norcross City Council in 1970, the city’s centennial year. More than five decades later, she has a namesake park in the heart of downtown.
