Cheers to year one
Friday, Sep. 4 — It’s Rough Draft Sandy Springs’ one-year anniversary! Thanks to everyone who has been with us from the start and those who have joined us along the way. We would love to know what you would like to read about in future issues as we start our second year as the city’s most comprehensive weekly newsletter.
🌡️ In past years, Mother Nature would turn down the temperature in metro Atlanta as we hit Labor Day weekend, but she seems to have lost track of the time this year. We’ll be in the 90s most of the weekend, and the temperatures will feel even hotter.
⚠️ Atlanta Watershed Management crews told Rough Draft they plan to reopen a section of Roberts Drive near Roswell Road to one-lane traffic by Friday, Sept. 4. The road has been closed for repairs to a water main.
🚨 Sandy Springs Police arrested a 17-year-old male suspected of fatally shooting his roommate at an apartment complex on Friday, Aug. 28.
💒 The Fulton County Probate Court is relaunching its “Forever Fridays” wedding ceremonies beginning Friday, Sept. 4, giving couples a fun, memorable, and completely free way to say “I do.”
💆🏽 The Bodyhood, a co-working space for massage therapists and other movement specialists, is opening a second location in Sandy Springs.
🍝 Baraonda closed its Sandy Springs location after just four years. The popular italian restaurant was recently featured in Rough Draft. Read more food news from our dining team, including a Latin American wine pop-up at Sandy Springs’ Under Pressure Wine Bar on Sept. 17.

SANDY SPRINGS SNAPSHOT: The community came out to enjoy the inaugural Sandy Springs Night Market on Thursday, Sept. 3. Attendees shopped for baked treats, freshly prepared dinners, and original pieces of art and jewelry. Additional markets are scheduled for the first Thursday of October and November.
🤔 Question for the day: Is it okay if we continue to wear our white jeans after Labor Day since the temperatures are still in the 90s?
Enjoy your Labor Day weekend,
The Rough Draft team

Luxury multifamily development is underway in Sandy Springs
🏢 In late August, a luxury multifamily developer announced construction is underway on a 382-unit building at 35 Glenlake Parkway in Sandy Springs on the former site of a UPS office near its global headquarters.
The $139 million, five-story development, named Caldwell, will mark Kennedy Wilson’s first luxury multifamily building in Georgia and its first partnership with Japanese construction firm Shimizu Corporation.
The plan is to redevelop the office property into residences averaging 937 square feet, with more than 17,500 square feet of indoor and outdoor amenities. Previously, the site was a large surface parking lot and a five-story office building.

Sandy Springs approves contracts for sidewalk extensions
🚴🏼 The Sandy Springs City Council approved a $1.5 million construction contract for about 3,000 feet of sidewalk along the west side of Lake Forrest Drive, coming close to connecting Mount Paran Road to Chastain Park. Wesley Waters, manager of the city’s capital improvement program, said completion of the project could take up to a year.
The gap shown on the project map represents an existing sidewalk segment constructed as part of phase one. The 6-foot-wide sidewalk with a 2-foot-wide grass buffer currently extends south from Mount Paran Road to just before Long Island Drive, where phase two picks up.
Because of Sandy Springs’ zig-zagging southern border, Council Member Andrew Chinsky said he’s working with the Chastain Park Conservancy and his counterparts in Atlanta to ensure the sidewalk connects.

Sandy Springs and Dunwoody tour of homes
🚋 Dunwoody Woman’s Club’s 53rd Annual Home Tour will be held on Oct. 2, featuring three exceptional private homes – two in Sandy Springs and one in Dunwoody, each offering a unique architectural style, beautiful interiors, and inspiring landscaping.
One of this year’s highlights, according to a release from the organization, is a home in Sandy Springs that has been completely transformed into a stunning modern farmhouse. The property features award-winning gardens, a fine art collection, and a model railroad room with winding tracks, miniature towns, bridges, and intricate scenery.
The Dunwoody Woman’s Club, in existence since 1971, is partnering with the Dunwoody Fine Art Association, bringing “en plein air” [or in the open air] artists to paint in the gardens of two of the featured homes. Guests can watch the artists and purchase original artwork directly from the easel or browse additional pieces in a boutique gallery.
