Federal authorities announced charges against 20 people in what investigators describe as a major gang-related firearms trafficking and drug distribution operation centered in metro Atlanta.

During a news conference Tuesday, officials with the U.S. Attorney’s Office, the ATF and the FBI displayed hundreds of confiscated weapons tied to the investigation.

Authorities say the investigation resulted in the seizure of nearly 1,500 firearms and federal charges against 20 defendants.

Investigators say some of those charged are affiliated with the Atlanta-based gang known as the Goodfellas.

According to federal officials, the case involves allegations of gang-related gun trafficking and drug dealing activity. The investigation was led by the FBI and ATF with assistance from multiple law enforcement partners.

Officials are expected to provide additional details about the organization, the firearms trafficking operation and the charges filed against the defendants.
