Sandy Springs City Council moves forward with City Springs 2.0

🌆 The Sandy Springs City Council voted unanimously to proceed with land sale negotiations for 5.5 acres of municipal property slated to be redeveloped into City Springs 2.0, just south of Mount Vernon Highway.

The Oct. 20 resolution is a project milestone, advancing plans for the next phase of the city’s downtown district. Elected officials discussed the project publicly for the first time after months of closed-door executive session conversations, proposal reviews, and debates over what Sandy Springs’ city center will look like in the 2030s.

Sandy Springs Mayor Rusty Paul, who teased the selection of a new development partner during his September State of the City address, said the public will have the next few months to provide feedback on the project.

Sandy Springs police cite former mayoral candidate at ‘No Kings’ rally

🪧 The Sandy Springs Police Department cited a former mayoral candidate and two-time runner-up, Dontaye Carter, for violating public assembly and protest permit ordinances during a “No Kings” rally on Saturday, Oct. 17.

Sandy Springs’ city code regulates public gatherings and forbids obstructing access to any public or private building. According to the city’s Oct. 21 statement, officers issued Carter a citation for violating city code after demonstrators refused requests to relocate.

Carter said his group received a permit the day before the rally, but never received any documentation from the city outlining where they were allowed to gather and protest. “We stood on a public sidewalk, blocked no one, and never disrupted the farmers’ market,” Carter said. “Yet, I received two citations for peacefully exercising our First Amendment rights.”

Major Sandy Springs construction projects near completion

🚶🏽‍♀️The city’s $18 million project to construct sidewalks and multi-use paths along Mount Vernon Highway is complete, with final landscaping and plantings expected before the end of the year.

Another nearby $27 million intersection project around Veterans Park is nearly complete, pending an aerial-to-underground utility relocation that will bolster the aesthetics of Sandy Springs Veterans Park and the Performing Arts Center at City Springs. Motorists can travel through the area, but streetscape conditions are holding up pedestrians who want to cross the state route from City Springs. (pictured above)

Sandy Springs officials are pitching more corridor and intersection improvements to voters as part of the city’s proposed project list for Fulton County’s upcoming TSPLOST renewal referendum.
