Members of Scraplanta’s Green Creatives Academy will present handcrafted designs in the Scraplanta Trashion Show on July 25.
The Green Creatives Academy (GCA) is a workshop series hosted by Scraplanta this summer focused on educating sewists and fiber artists on how to create more sustainable finished projects. The arts non-profit hosted 18 workshops from May 16 to July 25, teaching intermediate artists skills like visible mending, sewing zippers, and headpiece construction and projects like crochet disc belts and quilted tote bags. The program was supported by grant funding from the Molly Blank Fund.
Students who attended at least four of the GCA workshops will show off their creations during the Trashion Show.

“The show is supposed to be a way to inspire our graduates of our Green Creatives Academy to have pride in their work and celebrate with other people who are in the same boat as them,” Jonelle Dawkins, the Executive Director of Scraplanta, told Rough Draft. “… It’s a good way to show people all the things that they’ve learned.”
Scraplanta is partnering with Lifecycle Building Center for the event. LBC is a non-profit capturing building materials from the waste stream and directing them back into the community through reuse. Attendees of the event will have the opportunity to tour the facility and learn more about sustainable home improvement.
The Scraplanta Trashion Show is July 25 at 7 p.m. at LBC. Attendees will walk the green carpet and enjoy food trucks and a vendor market featuring local artists. Tickets are available on a sliding scale from $5 to $20.
Dawkins told Rough Draft that the GCA will be returning next summer, and the non-profit will be launching a similar paper-focused workshop series later this year. To keep up to date, visit Scraplanta’s website or follow them on Instagram.
