Atlanta Public Schools has named Sutton Middle School an April Wellness Spotlight school for creatively incorporating wellness lessons into the classroom throughout the school year. A number of classes have participated in the effort.
For instance, a group of approximately 40 Sutton students ran a one-mile portion of the ING Marathon in March as part of the “Run For Something Better” program. Physical education classes are also working on improving students’ fitness levels by using FitnessGrams.
Similarly, a seventh grade life science class created menus for a fictitious restaurant using the food guide pyramid MyPyramid to create balanced meals that fit within recommendations for each food group. Anatomy students are also using “reverse dissection” to detail organ systems and research related diseases and their causes, symptoms and treatments.
