Police will do home safety checks

The Sandy Springs Police Department has a form posted on its website for residents who would like safety checks performed on their residence while they are out of town.

The form can be accessed by visiting www.sandyspringsga.org and clicking on “Police” under the “Emergency Services” link. Completed forms can be mailed or dropped off at police headquarters, 5995 Barfield Road.

The complimentary, out-of-town check does not guarantee that a burglary or other crime will not occur. It is intended to be a request for an officer to periodically check the home, provided the officer is available to do so.

City wins Crown Community Award

The City of Sandy Springs has been awarded one of eight 2007 Crown Community Awards given by American City and County magazine.

The award came in recognition for the start up of the Sandy Springs Fire Rescue Department, which launched in December of last year and took just six months to create. The honor was received during a Nov. 15 reception at the National League of Cities conference and an article on the fire department will now appear in the December edition of American City and County. The other communities honored included Boston, Mass., Buffalo, N.Y., Compton, Calif., Ogden, Utah, Renton, Wash., San Diego, Calif., and Scottsdale, Ariz.

The awards honor cities where more than raw materials and money are used to provide services to residents. The magazine showcases cities who demonstrate leadership and creativity from government officials, especially when budgets may be stretched.
