Owner/Executive Chef Glen Law has opened Sweet Auburn Bistro at 171 Auburn Ave. The restaurant specializes in “New South” cuisine infused with Caribbean flair. Fried green tomatoes, chick egg rolls, scallop risotto, fried chicken and filet mignon are just some of the items on the menu.

Chazz Southern Cooking is now open in East Atlanta Village at 517 Flat Shoals Ave. featuring chicken, waffles and other soul/Southern comfort food.

Steven Satterfield, executive sous chef of Watershed, and Sotto Sotto general manager Neal McCarthy will open Miller Union in West Midtown on Brady Avenue this fall. The name refers to the eponymous stockyards in the area. According to the restaurant’s fan page on Facebook, Miller Union will be open for dinner six nights a week and the menu will be “dedicated to seasonal harvest” using “local ingredients with a fresh, simple approach.”

Jacksonville, Fla.-based Cami Cakes has opened a new location in Buckhead at 2221 Peachtree Road. For a look at the cupcakes on offer, check out the Web site at

The Iberian Pig, a restaurant run by the Castellucci family of the local Sugo restaurants, will open in the former Sage site at 121 Sycamore St. in late September. The Spanish-style restaurant features charcuterie, pork cheek tacos and the Iberian burger made of Waygu beef and served with eggplant fries.

The former Method Coffee Shop in Emory Village will become the second outpost for West Midtown’s popular Octane Coffee Bar and Lounge this fall.

Joia Restaurant & Lounge has opened in the former Saga space at 1100 Crescent St. and is owned by Marco Betti, owner of Antica Posta in Buckhead. Chef Brett Maddox, formerly of Aria, is heading up the kitchen. The menu includes salads, burgers, panini, pasta, meats and fish.

Atlanta-based Beer Connoisseur Magazine has launched featuring both local and national features. Readers can expect articles, reviews, education, events and entertainment, all related to brews.

Kirkwood Corner Market has opened at 1610 Hosea L. Williams Dr. and offering take-away and seating. Emerald Coast Coffee & Grille is now open in the Terminus building at the corner of Peachtree and Piedmont Roads in Buckhead. Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, the shop offers lattes, mochas and espresso and a menu of health food options designed to complement the beverage menu.

DBA Barbecue is open in Virginia Highland behind the post office at the corner of Highland and Amsterdam. Lunch and dinner is served every day and there’s a full bar. Live music on the weekends.


Inman Park Restaurant Week is set for Sept. 21-27 featuring special three-course meals at 12 participating restaurants and pubs. Participants (with prices) include: Fritti, Pure Taqueria, Sauced and The Albert for $15;  Parish, Park’s Edge, Rathbun’s, Shaun’s, Soto Soto, Wisteria and Zaya for $25; and Kevin Rathbun Steak for $35. The prices exclude alcohol, tax and gratuity. No tickets are needed, but reservations are suggested. The Atlanta Community Food Bank is offering cooking classes through September. The Simple Abundance Cooking Class series provides the community with the opportunity to interact with Atlanta’s top chefs, learn the secrets of exquisite dishes, have fun, and help feed Atlanta’s hungry. One hundred percent of class tuition benefits Atlanta’s Table, a project of the Food Bank that collects food from the local hospitality industry and delivers it to more than 40 nonprofit partner agencies that provide meals for those in need. Upcoming classes include one on Sept. 14 with Buckhead Diner chef Joey Riley at The Cook’s Warehouse in Brookhaven and Sept. 21 with chef Shaun Doty of Shaun’s at The Cook’s Warehouse in Midtown. The Ovarian Cancer Institute will host An Evening at Bacchanalia 2009 on Sept. 20 at 7 p.m. There will be a cocktail reception, silent auction and jazz.  The main dinner service will feature a special meal prepared by Chef Anne Quatrano and select wines from a private cellar. Midtown Restaurant Week runs from Saturday, Aug. 29 to Sunday, Sept. 6. Participating restaurants will be offering a special three-course menu for $25 per person (not including tax or gratuity). Brookhaven Dines-In will be held Monday, Sept. 28 to Oct. 2 to raise money for the Atlanta Ronald McDonald House Charities. The event is a series of dinner, parties and luncheons held in the Brookhaven community. H&F Bakery, part of Restaurant Eugene, has closed its retail venture because of lack of sales.
