The Sandy Springs Police Department will hold its first Citizens Police Academy in Spanish.

Police have previously held the academy for more than a year but only taught classes in English.

The seven-week course teaches civilians about police operations. The courses in Spanish will begin May 6 and end June 24. Classes are held every Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at police headquarters on Barfield Road.

Topics include crime scene and gang investigations, crime analysis, canine patrol and SWAT team responses. Participants will tour the city’s 911 call center and practice shooting techniques on the firearms simulator.

A graduation ceremony will be held July 1.
