Sandy Springs City Council on May 17 approved expansion plans for the Ignatius House Jesuit Retreat Center on Riverside Drive.

The retreat center wants to construct a 3,000-square-foot administration building and renovate its retreat house for more rooms. Extra parking spaces, system and landscape upgrades and a larger home for the Jesuit priests are in the plans.

The expansion also might include the creation of two garden areas for interment of cremated remains.

Some residents opposed that idea during the city approval process.

Ignatius House leaders have said they will raise $2.2 million for the facility improvements. They want to begin construction this year and will continue the work in phases over several years.
