Documentary film lovers mark your calendars for Saturdays, Jan. 8 and 22 as the new DecaturDocs series kicks off with the southeastern premiere of Kati with an I and Hey, Boo: Harper Lee & To Kill a Mockingbird.
DecaturDocs is a four-film screening and discussion series, housed in the new state-of-the-art performing arts center at Decatur High School, showcasing documentary films, accompanied by context-setting performances, and followed by interactive conversations, led by thought leaders, directors, and/or the film’s featured subjects.
Directed by Robert Greene, Kati with an I is an intimate documentary portrait of the director’s half-sister, a teenage girl in Alabama about to graduate high school. The film captures Kati’s moment-by-moment emotional transformation over the course of three tumultuous days that leave her future in doubt. With microscopic focus, through the searching lens of cinematographer Sean Price Williams , the movie explores the period in one’s life when the only constant is motion. The screening will be preceded by a context-setting apértif, a live acoustic performance by Jeremy Enzell of the Well Reds and discussion with Greene and Kati.
The series continues on Jan. 22 with director Mary Murphy’s Hey, Boo: Harper Lee & To Kill a Mockingbird, which reflects upon the impact of Harper Lee’s masterpiece (and it’s subsequent Hollywood adaptation) with a series of interviews with and readings by luminaries like newsman Tom Brokaw, Ambassador Andrew Young, author James Patterson and Oprah Winfrey, as well as Mary Badham who played Scout in the film. Mary Murphy will be on hand to discuss the documentary as well as sign copies of her book Scout, Atticus and Boo: A Celebration of 50 Years of To Kill A Mockingbird.
DecaturDocs is presented by the Atlanta Film Forum, which celebrates the art of cinema, explore international perspectives, honor the classics, showcase independent voices and discovers emerging talent.
