The Sandy Springs Police Department is 5-years old today.
The department officially formed July 1, 2006. Today it has 127 sworn police officers as well as 14 full time civilian personnel, according to the department’s website.
“In 2010, SSPD posted an overall drop in major crimes by just over 10 percent from the previous year,” the department reports on its website.
Councilwoman Dianne Fries reminisced about the moment the police force formed, when officers who had previously worked for other police departments switched uniforms and became the protectors of Sandy Springs.
“ They were Fulton County officers and 10 minues later they were in a Sandy Springs uniform,” Fries said. “The largest concern for the citizens of Sandy Springs was public safety and that still comes up number one with the citizens. It was always important to us starting up the city.”
Fries said the city has a “wonderful” police department.
The Department recently completed a move to a temporary site at 7840 Roswell Road. The department is waiting for the construction of a permanent location.
