The Sandy Springs City Council on Aug. 16 voted to put the question of whether to allow package alcohol sales in Sandy Springs on Sundays on the Nov. 8 ballot, but the council has the option to back out if the cost of putting it on the ballot is too high.
City Attorney Wendell Willard said the county is working with the Fulton County Department of Registration & Elections to get a “reasonable” price for putting on the election. Willard said he’d like the city to pay less than $7,500 to put the question on the ballot.
“We’re going to get the resolution approved and also authorize the city manager and city attorney to finalize negotiations and let the council and mayor to finalize that sum,” Willard said.
If approved by voters, retailers would be able to sell on Sunday between 12:30 p.m. and 11:30 p.m.
The new law would become effective Jan. 1, 2012, according to the current proposal.
In other business, the council:
– Approved a list of paving and reconstruction projects for 2012. The city staff reported the city would not spend more than $2.5 million on the projects.

– Signed a Memorandum of Agreement with Gas South that would allow the city to participate in the Municipal Alliance Program. The program would be a revenue generator for the city and new customers for the company.
According to the company, the program allows the city to offer Sandy Springs residents a 2-cent-per-therm discount on their service and will waive the $35 establishment fee. The city will receive a $12 “finder’s fee” for each new residential account and $24 for each new commercial account. The company will also provide the city $1 per month for each resident and $2 per month for each business that’s a customer of Gas South.
A background memo to the council says, “The program require the city to advertise Gas South on the city’s website as a business partner, allow use of the city’s name and logo to promote the alliance in local media (subject to City approval) and approve a co-branded direct mail that is sent to prospective natural gas customers.”
– Voted to publish city legal notices in Sandy Springs Reporter and Sandy Springs Neighbor newspapers instead of the The Fulton County Daily Report. The Sandy Springs Reporter is part of Reporter Newspapers, which publishes papers in Buckhead, Brookhaven and Dunwoody.
