A 23-year-old Sandy Springs man has been arrested for the theft of an $1,800 puppy from a Dunwoody pet store and the dog has been returned safe and sound, Dunwoody police reported.

Timothy Cadarral Cannon has been charged with larceny/shoplifting in the theft of the dog, Dunwoody police said in a press release Jan.31.

Police said a man walked into Petland at 4733 Ashford-Dunwoody Road on Jan.22 and told a clerk he planned to purchase the puppy. When the clerk’s back was turned, the man fled the store with the dog and jumped into a waiting car. The suspect dropped his cellphone, police said.

Geoff Campbell, sales manager of the pet store, said a man came into the store Jan. 28 and returned the Maltese puppy.

“He pulled a puppy out of his blue backpack and said somebody dropped it off at his house,” Campbell said. “It wasn’t the person that took the puppy.”

Campbell said the man wouldn’t tell him much, but he is glad the puppy was returned.

“I never thought that’s the way we would get it back,” Campbell said.

He said the dog is doing well and has been playing with the employees at the store.

“We couldn’t be happier she’s back and safe and healthy. We were worried because she’s just a baby,” Campbell said.
