A state Legislative committee on Feb. 7 recommended changing the proposed city of Brookhaven’s name to Ashford.
The House Governmental Affairs Committee voted 8-4 to change the name of the proposed city of Brookhaven to the proposed city of Ashford. Rep. Ed Lindsey, who lives in Historic Brookhaven, proposed the measure because Historic Brookhaven has been in existence more than 100 years.
“It’s not just snobbery, it’s something my neighbors feel very strongly about,” Lindsey said.
The committee voted 9-5 to send the bill on to the House Rules Committee.
Rep. Mike Jacobs, the chief proponent of Brookhaven incorporating, said he wants to see how other residents feel about the change.
“I look forward to hearing from the broader community about what they think about the name change,” he said. “On that subject there are many further opportunities in the legislative process to make adjustments as we move forward.”
