Residents concerned about the Georgia Department of Transportation’s project to widen Johnson Ferry and Abernathy roads got some good news this week.
Sandy Springs City Councilman Chip Collins said GDOT has informed him that Abernathy Road between Roswell and Brandon Mill roads will be four-lanes starting Sunday. Abernathy turns into Johnson Ferry at the intersection with Brandon Mill.
In October, angry residents descended on City Hall and complained to GDOT officials about the pace of the road widening project, which has been on the transportation department’s to-do list since 1987. In October, GDOT officials said the deadline for finishing the entire project was moved from June to December.
Collins said public pressure on GDOT paid off.
“I hope this is the first step in the long-awaited improvement and normalization of traffic in this area,” Collins said. “I believe that the turnout and reaction of citizens at our October town hall had a lot to do with GDOT and the contractor picking up the pace and getting this section completed. Thanks to all for being a squeaky wheel!”
