Construction started March 6 on the much-anticipated interchange at I-85 and State Route 400.
The project will reconstruct the interchange of 400 and 85 by providing connector ramps from 400 southbound to 85 northbound and from 85 southbound to 400 northbound. A pedestrian trail will also be added from Cheshire Bridge Road to Lenox Road, including a bridge across the North Fork Peachtree Creek.
“We are excited to get this project underway,” said Georgia Department of Transportation District Engineer Bryant Poole in a press release. “When it is completed, I think the public will be very pleased with the final product as we get some congestion relief for the arterial roads in the area that have had to deal with the transitional traffic.”
During construction, lane closures on 85 and 400 will only take place overnight and on the weekends. Lane closures on the arterial roadways in the area including Buford Highway, Cheshire Bridge Road and Sidney Marcus Boulevard will be permitted at night only. Later in the project, the Lindberg Drive HOV ramps will be closed for up to six months.
The project is budgeted to cost $21.5 million and is expected to be complete by Dec. 31, 2013, the GDOT press release said.
