The city of Dunwoody will use soil from the Chamblee Charter High School construction site to build an open play field and recreational site at Brook Run Park, city officials announced March 29.

The soil is being hauled to the old hospital facility in the northwest area of Brook Run Park. Once in place, the dirt will be moved, graded and leveled to create an approximately 30,000-square-foot recreation area.

The dirt from the construction site was previously permitted to be dumped on a property in the Glaze Drive neighborhood. Following complaints from residents, city officials worked with the contractor of the Chamblee High School construction to find an alternative location for the excess dirt.

“We are pleased to have found both an alternative site for the soil coming from the construction site and a beneficial use for the dirt being moved,” said Dunwoody’s Parks and Recreation Manager Brent Walker in a press release. “We are doing everything possible to ensure this operation is safe, efficient and as non-intrusive a process as possible for residents and park visitors.”

The city ran tests on the soil and determined it meets all of the required U.S. Federal Environmental Protection Agency standards, the city said. Officials estimated that hauling the dirt from Chamblee High to the park will take approximately two weeks.
