Atlanta Police confirmed that a 16-year-old died and another teenager was wounded after shots rang out at Piedmont Park in Midtown on Saturday night.
According to a statement from APD, at approximately 9:03 p.m., officers responded to a report of gunfire inside Piedmont Park. Upon arrival, officers located two female victims suffering from apparent gunshot wounds.
Responding medical personnel pronounced one female deceased at the scene. She was identified Sunday as Tianah Robinson, 16, of Riverdale, according to the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s office.
The second victim, a 15-year-old girl, was alert, conscious, and breathing and was transported to the hospital for treatment.
Thousands at gathered at the park on Saturday for the 404 Day Festival, but APD said there was no information to connect the shooting to the event.
Preliminary investigation indicates the incident stemmed from an unpermitted gathering that occurred near the far west end of the park.
Organizers of the 404 Day Weekend, the 404 Collective, released a statement on Sunday regarding the incident:
Our hearts go out to the family of the woman who lost her life and to the 15-year-old who was injured near Piedmont Park on Saturday night. This is a tragedy and our thoughts are with everyone affected.
404 Day! Weekend, the four-day citywide celebration produced by The 404 Collective, Atlanta Influences Everything, ButterATL, Finish First, and Trap Music Museum, is a separate event and we have no affiliation with the 404 Day Festival held at Piedmont Park.
Our events took place across multiple venues across Atlanta and concluded without any incidents.
We remain committed to producing safe, community-centered experiences that celebrate Atlanta and reinvest in our city.
APD said during an early morning press conference that they had recovered ballistic evidence at the scene, but did not have a suspect in custody.
Various social media posts showed people running from the park as automatic gunfire could be heard in the distance.
This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
