The Georgia House of Representatives has approved the bill calling for a July vote on whether to create a new city called Brookhaven in north DeKalb County.

The House approved the bill 104-57 in the final hours of the 2012 legislative session March 29, according to Rep. Mike Jacobs. The bill already had been approved by the state Senate and now goes to Gov. Nathan Deal for his signature.

“The legislative process has run its course.  It has been a tough road, but I am glad that the citizens will have the right to choose their form of local government.  That is what HB 636 is all about,” Jacobs said.

The bill  calls for a vote of residents of the area on July 31 on whether to establish the proposed city. If created, the new city would be the most populous in DeKalb County, its proponents have said.
