Atlanta’s City Council on Monday, July 16, banned smoking in public parks and District 7 Councilman Howard Shook was the only no vote.

The ban would fine violators up to $1,000, District 8 Councilwoman Yolanda Adrean said.

Adrean said Shook felt the police department had bigger priorities than cracking down on smokers.

Adrean said she had her own concerns and asked the city to reassess the new policy in a few months.

“I didn’t feel strongly about it because the parks I frequent I rarely see people smoking,” Adrean said. “I can’t say for me personally that it affects my park experience.”

She said she wanted to make sure the violations won’t be a strike against young people applying for jobs and colleges. She said the city told her it would not be.

The ban also doesn’t apply to spaces leased to private operators, like the Chastain Amphitheater.
