Candidates and potential voters mill around during an Oct. 30 meet-and-greet session hosted by the Brookhaven Reporter.

On Oct. 30 the gymnasium of the Briarwood Recreation Center was decorated with balloons and placards as candidates vying to become part of Brookhaven’s first City Council reintroduced themselves to voters.

The election is Nov. 6.

The Brookhaven Reporter hosted the event which drew 17 out of the more than 20 candidates running for office. The amateur politicians shook hands and explained their positions to potential voters. Early in the evening there were around 100 people in the room, but they came and went throughout the evening.

Anand Thaker, a resident who has kept up with the crowded race for city council, said he wanted one more chance to see candidates in action before casting his vote.

“The thing to me that’s most intriguing is the number of people who have stepped up to represent their community,” he said of the crowded field of candidates.
