ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA, Reporter Newspapers broadcast partner) –
Rep. Phil Gingrey, M.D., (R-GA), announced his candidacy for U.S. Senate in his hometown of Augusta Wednesday morning.
The seat comes available after Sen. Saxby Chambliss, (R-GA), announced his retirement in January.
During his remarks, Gingrey highlighted his lifetime as a physician, his conservative principles, and his desire to serve Georgians.
“Once we as doctors are entrusted with the wellbeing of our patients and their children, it is our duty to take action, to be selfless and fulfill our obligation to the service of others,” Gingrey said. “I did so willingly and it brought me great joy throughout my professional career. However, I always had a desire to do more.
“We are Georgians, we are Americans, and we are often at our finest when our back is to the proverbial wall.”
Gingrey will hold a news conference at Georgia Tech, where earned his undergraduate degree, at 2:30 p.m.
Phil and his wife, Billie, have been married 43 years. They have four children and 13 grandchildren.
