The Lakeside Community Alliance has raised the $30,000 it needs to pay for a feasibility study for a new city in north DeKalb County, members of the group announced June 25.
Alliance members said they had contracted the Carl Vinson Institute of the University of Georgia to conduct the study.
The study should be completed in time for discussion of the proposed city of Lakeside in the 2014 session of the Georgia Legislature, alliance chair Mary Kay Woodworth said during a press conference on the plaza outside the Manuel Maloof Center in Decatur, the headquarters for DeKalb’s county government.
Woodworth said alliance members had held more than 20 community meetings to discuss the proposal.
“We have been told time and time again, the county is too big,” Woodworth said during the press conference.
If the Legislature agrees and voters approve the new city, it would be the eighth new municipality created in metro Atlanta since 2005, when Sandy Springs started. It would be the third new city in DeKalb, after Dunwoody and Brookhaven.
