Hundreds of people from the LGBT community and their supporters were on the streets of Midtown on the evening of June 26 to celebrate the US Supreme Court rulings on the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) and California’s Proposition 8 banning same-sex marriage. The gathering was held at the intersection of 10th Street and Piedmont Avenue, with participants urging motorists to honk while waving banners and flags.

The court struck down a key provision DOMA, ruling that same-sex spouses legally married in a state may receive federal benefits. For the Prop 8 case, the court allowed a lower court’s ruling to stand, which will allow the resumption of same-sex marriage in the state.
