The condition of Lake Forrest Drive is worse than city officials previously thought.

On Monday, Sandy Springs announced it is closing both the north and southbound lanes of the road while crews work to repair the damage.

The road had previously been restricted to one lane.

“The City of Sandy Springs announced that beginning today, Lake Forrest Drive, between Lake Summit and Chevaux Court, will close for both north and southbound traffic,” a press release from the city says. “Updated geotechnical evaluations released Friday show the stability of the slope more compromised than originally understood.  Southbound drivers are asked to detour using Northwood Drive to bring drivers to Roswell Road.  The Northbound detour already in place, will remain unchanged.  Lake Forrest southbound, past Northwood Drive, will be open only for local residential traffic. Drivers are asked to use extreme caution and maintain the posted speed limits along the detour routes. The closure will remain in effect until construction work to stabilize the slope along the road is completed.”

Residents living near the closed section of the road noted that some drivers were attempting to get around the detour by heading north in the southbound lane of Lake Forrest, a move they believed could’ve resulted in a serious accident.

The city had no timetable for completion of the road project.
