The Atlanta Board of Education on Monday, Aug. 12, voted to approve a charter petition for Atlanta Classical Academy, going against the superintendent’s recommendation to deny the charter school’s application.

Atlanta Public Schools “Talk Up APS” blog carried the news of the decision. The vote was unanimous, both to deny the superintendent’s recommendation and approve the petition.

District 4 Board of Education member Nancy Meister made the motion recommending approval of the charter school.

If the charter school stays on its current schedule, it could open in 2014 as a K-8 school. The school will use the classical education model, which promotes literacy in western traditions.
