The “diverging diamond intersection” at Ashford-Dunwoody Road and I-285 won a regional transportation award during the 2013 America’s Transportation Awards, according to the Georgia Department of Transportation.

The interchange, the first of its kind in the state, was a winner in the “ahead of schedule, small project” category, DOT announced. The award was unveiled Aug. 27 at a meeting in Asheville, N.C., DOT said in a press release.

“It was a great project,” said Georgia DOT Commissioner Keith Golden. “It was innovative and has proven to be very effective in relieving congestion in that very busy corridor north of Atlanta. To get it done ahead of schedule was a real benefit to the community as well.”
