If you’ve been caught in heavier traffic than usual along Ponce de Leon Avenue, the reason is two-fold: repaving and new bike lanes along part of the busy thoroughfare. As part of the repaving, Georgia DOT crews have eliminated two of the six original lanes to make room for dedicated bike lanes between Juniper Street and Ponce de Leon Place.

The three-foot wide bike lanes will have a painted buffer and road icons to separate them from vehicular traffic. Work is expected to continue until Oct. 1. Also this week, the City of Decatur has started work on repaving parts of E. Ponce de Leon, which will also continue into October.

Expect traffic delays and consider alternate routes as work continues.
