The federal government has shut down due to the U.S. Congress’s inability to pass a spending bill, but what does that mean for Intown?
The Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site in the Old Fourth Ward is closed, including the original Ebenezer Baptist Church, King’s birthplace and visitor center, and so is the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Center. Actually, all of the nation’s National Parks have been temporarily closed and workers furloughed.
You also won’t be able to renew or apply for a passport, get any kind of action on a government loan, visit any of the nation’s National Parks and getting in touch with Congress might be more difficult as staffers also received temporary pink slips. An estimated 77,000 federal workers are expected to be furloughed in the shutdown.
Despite the inaction of Congress, the Affordable Care Act (known as Obamacare) begins today – shutdown or not.
