Beloved local chef and restaurateur Ria Pell died Sunday from an undetected enlarged heart, according to a notice posted on the Facebook page of Pell’s popular restaurant, Ria’s Bluebird.
Pell, 45, had recently competed and won on the Food Network cooking competition “Chopped” and the Bluebird had earned recognition around the country, including a favorable review from The New York Times. She was also a founder of Mondo Homo, an alternative queer art and music festival, and also frequently DJ’d at Mary’s, the gay bar in East Atlanta Village.
A funeral service will be held Nov. 30 at noon at Westview Cemetery followed by a wake at Bluebird, 421 Memorial Drive.

I had always heard of Ria’s Bluebird Cafe, and even saw it featured on an episode of a Food Network series called The Hungry Detective, I just wish that I had had a meal there before she passed away too soon.
