Intowners can get their first hands-on look at Google Glass on Feb. 8-9 at a special event at The Foundry at Puritan Mill,916 Joseph E. Lowery Blvd. NW. The public is invited to come and check out the wearable computer from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Not yet available to consumers, Google Glass is incorporated into eyeglasses and allows the wearer to do voice searches, video calls, photo sharing and more. If you want to attend, RSVP at this link.
As part of a maintenance procedure, the Department of Parks and Recreation and Atlanta Public Schools will close the M.L. King Middle School Natatorium on Connally St.. The natatorium will be closed from Feb. 10 through April 13. Regular users of the natatorium are encouraged to use other swimming facilities at Adamsville, Rosel Fann an Washington Park.
The Fulton County Board of Commissioners has proposed an increase in the county’s tax rate, though state officials claim it’s illegal because of a tax freeze put in place last year. According to county officials, the commission proposed increasing the 2014 tax rate by 1.57 mills, which would increase property taxes by $78.50 for a $200,000 house.Fulton County Chairman John Eaves said the increase, the first since 1991, was necessary to sustain funding to Grady Hospital, senior citizen services and other programs that would have had to be cut. The Midtown Neighbors’s Association is partnering with Trees Atlanta for its annual Planting Day on Saturday, Feb. 8, at 9 a.m. Volunteers are welcome and should meet at the pencil sculpture at Grady High School before fanning out to help plant trees in the area. Clark Atlanta University (CAU) will celebrate African-American History Month with a historic forum on Feb. 12, with the Rev. Dr. Joseph E. Lowery and Ambassador Andrew Young, at 7 p.m. in Davage Auditorium in Haven-Warren Hall on campus, 223 James P. Brawley Drive, SW. The forum is free and open to the public.
