A bill to create a city of Lakeside in DeKalb County has been approved by the state Senate.

On Feb. 26, the Senate approved the Lakeside bill in a vote of 32-17, according to the Senate press office. If approved by the House of Representatives and signed by the governor, the bill would allow for a May 20 referendum for voters to decide on incorporating the city.

“This is a tremendous step forward for the citizens of our community who for the past year have expressed their desire to form a more responsive government closer to the people,” Mary Kay Woodworth, chairwoman of the Lakeside City Alliance, said in a news release. “We want to thank the Senate leadership for giving us a chance to express our voice at the ballot box.”

Lakeside is one of three proposed cities hoping to incorporate in the same area of DeKalb County this year. The proposals for cities called Briarcliff, Lakeside and Tucker all overlap in the Northlake Mall area.

The proposed city would be bounded by I-85, I-285 and Chamblee-Tucker Road, the Gwinnett County line, and North Druid Hills Road. It would include Mercer University, Northlake Mall, Embry Hills and the Toco Hills shopping center.

If approved, Lakeside would be the third city created in DeKalb County since 2008, following the incorporation of Dunwoody and Brookhaven.
