The Atlanta Board of Education voted unanimously this afternoon to hire Dr. Meria Carstarphen as the new superintendent of Atlanta Public Schools. Carstarphen signed a three-year contract and will officially begin work on July 7. Since her announcement as the sole finalist for the job, Carstarphen has made numerous appearances at schools and around the city.
“Today marks a critical step toward achieving educational excellence for our students. This is an important moment for our children, communities and our city,” said Courtney D. English, Atlanta Board of Education chair.
Carstarphen has nearly 20 years of experience in education in a variety of school districts in Texas, Minnesota and Washington, DC.
