Miguel Southwell was confirmed Monday as the new general manager of Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. His nomination by Mayor Kasim Reed in May was approved by the Atlanta City Council with a unanimous 13-0 vote. “I thank Mayor Reed and the members of the Atlanta City Council for giving me the opportunity to continue to guide Hartsfield-Jackson toward even greater success as we work to complete the airportmaster plan and grow our cargo business,” Southwell said. “I believe the primary purpose of an airport is to serve as the main economic development tool for the surrounding community and, working closely with the mayor and Council, we will strive to attract more businesses and jobs to Atlanta.”
Delta Air Lines opens the Delta Flight Museum today, a 68,000 square foot facility that traces the company’s history and the development of commercial aviation. The grand opening event also marks Delta’s 85th anniversary of passenger service, dating back to its first passenger flight from Dallas to Jackson, Miss. on June 17, 1929. The state-of-the-art museum has an array of interactive exhibits and rare aviation items. Strap in for a training session in the flight simulator — the only full-motion “sim” open to the public in the U.S. Check out a restored 1940 Douglas DC-3 passenger plane and the Waco 125 biplane, the only aircraft of its kind remaining. Kinds will enjoy a scavenger hunt to collect passport stamps from various exhibit and a paper airplane-making station. The museum is located at 1060 Delta Blvd.
