Atlanta City Council President Ceasar Mitchell has convened a special meeting of the city council for Monday, June 30, at 10 a.m. for a briefing on the lawsuit threatened by Atlanta Public Schools over unpaid reimbursements for Atlanta BeltLine funding. The meeting will be held at city hall, 55 Trinity Ave.
In 2005, the city and APS entered into a contract laying out how the Beltline would be funded. APS agreed to give up some of its property tax dollars. To help offset that, the city promised to make fixed annual payments to APS based on the assumption that real estate prices would rise. The city owes APS around $19 million, according to a report from WABE.
At Monday’s meeting, the Atlanta Beltline will provide a history of the intergovernmental agreement between the City of Atlanta, Invest Atlanta (the city’s economic development authority) and the Atlanta Public Schools. In addition, the council will be briefed on the action plan to resolve the issue. The briefing will be open to the public, but there will be no public comment.
