Georgia’s new gun law is officially in effect, meaning permitted weapons are now legal in bars, some churches and government buildings without security. Know as the “Safe Carry Act” by proponents and “guns everywhere” by detractors, the new law has caused headaches for law enforcement, according to a report by WABE. Under the new law, police cannot stop and ask a person carrying a visible firearm if they have a permit unless they see the person acting suspiciously.

The City of Atlanta has received an upgrade from Standard & Poor’s Ratings Services to its general obligation bond ratings from “A” to “AA” with a stable outlook. “An increase in our bond rating is a big deal because it allows us to get needed financing at a reduced interest rate,” said City of Atlanta CFO Jim Beard in a press statement. “Over time, that represents a significant cost savings to the city that we can then invest in other critical needs.”In upgrading the city’s bond rating, S&P cited numerous factors, including its strong financial management policies and budgetary performance, abundant cash reserves and improved revenue outlook.

An Atlanta police officer received cuts, abrasions and a fractured hand while trying to stop an allegedly impaired driver in an overnight incident on McDaniel Street near Turner Field. According to a report in the AJC, Officer Kevin Thigpen and his partner spotted a car with the driver slumped over the wheel. When the officers approached, the driver woke up and tried to flee the scene dragging Thigpen before crashing into a pole.
